Remodelling the Kitchen

Part 1 - Destroy!

In late 2002 I decided it was finally time to redo the kitchen. I'd had the countertops redone in 1992, and the floor and wallpaper redone in 1995. But the cabinets were the original ones installed when the buiding was built in 1974, the countertops had gotten scarred by falling dishes during the Northridge earthquake in Jan. 1994, and It Was Just Time. I wanted corner cabinets that I could use all of, pot drawers, and a cookie sheet cabinet. And if the new hinges, etc., could keep Kinker out of that bottom corner cabinet, well that would be nice, too.

By the time the design was done and we were ready to start, it was Feb. 2003. Six weeks, they told me. Ok, I can deal with six weeks of no gas and no running water. I still had the refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker, and there's a reason paper plates exist. So, six weeks of "camping"— as long as nothing went wrong.

A few last shots of the old kitchen

(why yes, I do like fridge magnets; why do you ask?)

After removing the wallpaper

Demolition day- 18 Feb 2003

The wallboard's not supposed to fall down when the cabinets are removed...

And it's wet. And moldy...

After clearing away the soaked wallboard, we found a broken drainpipe. It probably sheared off during the Northridge quake, but never leaked enough for water to come out from under the cabinets. I'd wondered why it always smelled a little damp downstairs, and where all the crickets were coming from.
